We’ve had several football coaches hired in recent weeks at Goddard, North and Augusta. What I’d like to ask you today is, if you could hire for any coaching position, what are you looking for? Are you looking for a name? Are you looking for someone who was an assistant at a winning program? Do you want a teacher or is Rule 10 OK?

What’s important to you?

Last night at a ball game I talked to a writer from The Salina Journal that said Valley Center hired Pat Haxtun the SE-Saline coach. If it is true, they will be getting a coach that can get you fired up. He has been very successful and is a good fundimentals coach. Very animated on the side line during a game. Works the officials all game long. I got to know him mostly during track season, as he was the Head Coach for their track program. Joanna, you will enjoy talking with him if he has been hired by Valley Center.

Hiring a coach in high school is a very complex issue. I believe you should hire the person that is qualified. It does not matter, if they are rule 10 or a teacher. Sometimes teachers are hired and they are not the best qualified. They should have experience and be able to work with the “2010″ kid…They must be a people person and able to maintain control of their respective program. Another hugh factor is who they hire as assistants. Sometimes Wichita schools don’t always hire the “best” person and the program suffers as a result. Character plays a huge part and understand, and i don’t care what anybody says, they must know how to win and get their kids motivated to do so.if they don’t win then the school will look for another coach…LOL(in most instances not all)

Good job Eagle for the Saturday paper and the diffrent perspective on the behind the scenes. Also, Praise to Coach Daignault and the West high coaching staff and players. What a great run. When they were losing the past few seasons he has stayed with the program and had patience. Now, they are having some success. This is called loyalty and a lot of coaches and even players don’t have this most valuable trait. I hope you have continued success and make a run at state. This is when it gets fun!!!

I think the most important thing is what kind of person and role model the coach is. Yes he should be qualified. I also believe a big part of a programs success depends on the assistants that the coach hires and how the staff motivates and gets the most of their players.

tball, what is a “2010″ kid. If you want to be coached and listen, it does not matter what era you grow up in. We had kids that had distractions and problems at home during the 60’s when I grew up and played. We, as a society, have told the kids that they need some special treatment because someone on a talk show has told us to tell them that. I will agree with you that some of the people that are hired to teach do not know squat about some of the sports they are coaching.

AD’s must hire the right people person that can relate with the kids. it doesnt matter how much knowledge of the game they know if they can’t get the kids to buy in and believe. if the kid is on a coachs side, the coach can get them to do anything in academics and athletics. Administration needs to realize that a award winning teacher is not mean they are the best coaches on the field or court. also the coaches need to focus on their athletes succeeding in life. which means on and off the field/court issues. the community here in the midwest think coaches shouldn’t concentrate on their athletes all year around and just during the off-season. if we want our athletes to compete with the top states in their respective sports than our coaches need more time to help EACH STUDENT-ATHLETE be successfull.

    Jim Cross,

I’m glad you asked that question, What is a “2010″ kid. i agree with you, if you want to be coached and listen. What i mean is, now, i deal with “2010″ kids, who don’t have fathers at home. They are being raised by mothers. I have to be coach, counselor, daddy, mama, babysitter. I have to pick them up and drop them off. I have to give money and be everything to them. The “2010″ kid have cell phones, and video games, and watch bad examples on tv. They have people tell them they will make it to the NBA and they are not. They think they are better than they really are. In my era and yours…i am 100% sure all the coaches had to do was teach kids skills and coach. Now, 2010, you have to do more because the demand is there. That is what i mean by “2010″, until you deal with them…inner city and outer city, you may not know. we are dealing with a different kind of kid than when you and I were coming up. It is what it is…i am not talking about special treatment, i am talking about the type of kid and how they are raised now and what they have now as opposed to then.

    tball,

Out here in Western Kansas we deal with many of those kids. I know we do not deal with as many as you see in a days time. I appreciate your work with all of the kids. You must walk a fine line in dealing with all of their problems and not appear showing favoritism to any one athlete. You remember what some parent or coach would have done to us if we acted the way you have explained. I think I can still see the rings on my rear end from the holes in the paddle.

TBall you hit it 100% if they dont “buy in” i dont care how much football a coach knows. See Goddard as the latest example. It takes a Staff of guys that get the “2010″ kid. I dont think most people really understand what it takes to get 50/100 kids motivated and taught since most have no clue how to play real football when they enter the program.
