Check out my story on Kansas.com — I’ll have a more indepth version in Tuesday’s paper — on Via Christi not renewing his contracts to provide athletic trainers to the seven public high schools in the City League.

I think the trainers are necessary. Frankly, it’s a safety issue. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

What happened to the good old days when the local Doctor attended the games or events and assisted in case of injuries. We were spoiled at Andale when Doc. Stech did this for years until he retired form practice. He was a great man!

Heck…if the HS sports budget cuts with athletic’s and all keeps up, the trainers won’t be necessary. May not have any athletes to train on if this keeps up!

I was happy to hear Maize, Maize South, BC and Collegiate are keeping their trainers. I was afraid those poor white kids wouldn’t have access to quality athletic trainers. God bless Via Christi

Voice…a little jealous are ya? I’ve never known Maize and Maize South to be a part of the Wichita School District or Collegiate for that matter. Leave BC out of it too! A private Catholic school can do whatever they want, ya little racial profiler you!

Injuries can happen in any sport at any time, but certainly experience shows that some tend to have a higher frequency of injuries that are more severe or need more immediate attention. A compromise posture might be to staff those events where a trainer tends to keep busy, but as a temporary budget measure, not staff some of those that trainers have been attending, but which do not produce frequent serious injury. Trainers have never attended all events. It would be physically impossible, since many times several sports are in action simultaneously.

BobChi, great point. The trainers were around for lots of practice nights too. Perhaps limit their presence to the higher risk events. Although it sounds as if it’s a done deal. Too bad.

This is an unfortunate situation for the student athletes, their families and the coaches in the city league. These certified athletic trainers provided the obvious services of prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries sustained by the student athletes they worked with. What may be lost in this story is the safety they provided to these student athletes. Safety from unqualified individuals portraying themselves as a “trainer”, when in fact, they are not a certified athletic trainer. All too often therapists, nurses, chiropractors and physicians in the area are misleading student athletes and often times making unsafe recommendations. Having worked with many of these student athletes after their high school careers are finished, I am constantly exposed to these unfortunate situations. I hope the USD 259 administration and/or individual high schools figure out a positive solution so that certified athletic trainers will continue to be around for the student athletes sake.

The way I understand this is that Via Christi will no longer provide thier trainers. It doesn’t say they won’t have trainers at all. The AD says they will look at other options. We used to have Via Christi trainers at our schools and now have trainers from Advanced Orthopedic.

    Sorry – their trainers!

Joanna, thank you for sharing this information with everyone. I miss you! And thank YOU, Dr. Feelgood, for referring to us as “certified athletic trainers.” Yes, our #1 mission is to provide immediate care to all our athletes, and what a shame that 259 is having to revamp how they provide medical attention to their students. Best of luck to Bill Faflick and the schools’ AD’s. There are a lot of great ATC’s who would LOVE to stay at their schools. I hope they get scooped up soon! And, I hope this situation helps make the community more aware of the enormous benefit being provided to their student-athletes when there is an ATC on-site. When God closes a door, He opens a window…..
