The Wichita school district has proposed changing the work week during the summer months to four 10-hour days, with complete shutdowns at all schools (except those with summer latchkey). That would mean no one would be allowed in the gyms or on the football fields and tennis fields.

And that would affect summer workouts. Camps would only be able to be 4 days instead of the customary five days.

It would begin the week of June 7 and end July 19, so teams could get their five-day camps in before June 7.

It also would affect weight-lifting and conditioning programs through the summer.

So here’s my question to you, is this a big deal? For coaches, I’d say it is. The worry is always what another program is doing, how the public schools in Wichita would fall behind say, a Derby or a Maize or Goddard.

But are other schools in the programs considering doing this? Budget cuts are imminent and this would save nearly $43,000. Is it worth it? Should coaches be upset?

Is it a big deal, No! The athletes can still run and do personal training on their own. Let a teacher go so the gym and weight room can be open 5 days a week. Athletics above academics!

I curious as to how a field or tennis court usage during daylight hours could cost money. I can see power usage in the building, but outside…seriously? I think it is a shame, some kids have no access to weights, and the togetherness provided in the summer is priceless. In the end, the kids are the ones who pay the price of cuts by losing opportunities.

Yeah, that’s what we get for trusting the KSHSAA for using good money and renting out Intrust Bank Arena for the State Wrestling Tournament at a somewhat low cost of $76,000 and going in the hole for $43,000 on the deal and now our athletes get this! Good thinking guy’s!

Hey, just to take your mind off the sucky economy and budget cuts and all…have you guys seen on Yahoo the Deer/Man mascot for the Milwaukee Bucks do his dunk off a step-ladder 10ft. above the rim doing a back-flip from the top step, landing on a mat? It’s awesome! I bet he sings that song to himself all the time…”I’m Awesome” after doing that!
Lets see King James do that one!!

Casino tax money would easily solve some of the budget cut issues in our school sysytem!! Phil Ruffin spoke of that in an article in sundays paper. Bible belt or not, our schools, our kids and our teachers will continue to suffer. Next schools will have to ration out the air to cut down on the electric bill.

Is it really that big of deal. How about the football coaches give the kids friday’s off anyway and let kids be kids. A shame?! I say it is a shame that kids have to spend their entire summer at mandatory weights, open gyms, 7 on 7 and whatever else coaches put the kids through. You can say it is not mandatory but we all know the pressure put on kids by the coaches.

I am old enough to remeber when the lottery supporters said it would save our schools from future cuts. Casinos are no the answer anymore than the lottery was.

We have to start living within our means. We cannot have every “bell and whistle” “now”. We tear down schools because they are old, top heavy administration, retirement plans the private sector dreams of,ect. We lived high on the hog and now it’s time to pay for our excesses. If we really want to help the children, we will not pass the bill onto them.
