I’m in Lawrence bouncing back and forth from Class 6A baseball and Class 6A softball, which are, fortunately, located right next door to each other. We had some nasty weather that pushed back the starts of today’s games several hours from our scheduled first pitches at 11 a.m. for baseball and 10 a.m. for softball.  I’ll be on here all day with updates from the games I see.

BASEBALL

Maize 10, Leavenworth 0 FINAL – Maize opens things up with six runs in the second inning and wins with a solid but not spectacular performance from winning pitcher Gage Byers. The Eagles had a little trouble adjusting to the turf at Hoglund and had some outs by just sliding past the bag at second and third that probably could’ve ended this game after three inings. Instead, we went five and Maize moves on.

SM East 2, W. Northwest 0 FINAL — Northwest can’t capitalize on a bases loaded situation in the 2nd and SM East pitcher Ben Burns throws a complete-game shutout. SM East will face Maize in tomorrow’s 10 a.m. semifinal.

BV West 11, Campus 3 FINAL — BV West was only up 5-2 headed into top of 7th then blew the game open. Tough loss for Colts, who made it to state for first time since 2004, when they were still Class 6A.

SOFTBALL

Goddard 11, Derby 3 FINAL — Lions go 3-0 against Derby for the season and win this game behind a tough game from pitcher Jessica Sturm who is … very competitive. More on that later. Goddard advances to tomorrow’s noon semifinal.

Olathe Northwest 7, Maize 6 FINAL — Maize loads the bases in bottom of 7th but can’t finish off the rally from being down 7-4. Eagles led 4-3 thanks to a 3-run home run from Devon McCreath and a McCreath run on a throwing error.
