I’m back at Hoglund Ballpark/Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence for the conclusion of today’s Class 6A baseball and softball tournaments. Maize is first up in baseball, taking on Shawnee Mission East in one of the semifinals. Blue Valley West plays Lawrence in the other. Over at Arrocha for softball, Olathe East plays Washburn Rural in one semifinal and Goddard plays Olathe Northwest in the other semifinal at noon. I’ll update with scores as I get them.
BASEBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP Maize 10, BV West 0 FINAL — Run-rule victory for the Eagles in six innings completes a 25-0 season and puts them in the discussion for the greatest high-school baseball team in Kansas history. Junior Craig Nicks got the call for Maize and was masterful.
Maize 7, SM East 6 (8 innings) FINAL — Maize led 3-0 in first ining then got down 5-3 and never led again until DJ McClure was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in bottom of eighth to score Jeremy Morgan and put Eagles in the finals at 5:30 p.m. WSU signee Conner Knight struggled through first three innings for Maize and was pulled for Gabe Cook, who didn’t give up a run and struck out five for the victory. Maize will face BV West, a 3-2 winner over Lawrence, in the championship game at 3:15 p.m., as Eagles go for first title since 2005.
SOFTBALL
Olathe NW 8, Goddard 2 FINAL — This Class 6A semifinal had Olathe NW leading just 2-1 headed into the seventh inning, but ONW blew up for a 6-spot in the top half of the inning and will face Washburn Rural in the championship game. Goddard faces Olathe East in the consolation game.
