Derby football is hosting it’s 7-on-7 tournament and the Battle of the Big Uglies on Saturday. If you’re dying to check out football, you need to see this. Games start at 9 a.m.

I’ve attached some of the rules from the competition. It’s a well-planned event.

This is a free event and Derby coach Brandon Clark said more than 700 athletes (23 teams in the 7-on-7, around 40 for the Battle of the Big Uglies) and 70 volunteers will participate.

Big Uglies events

5 Man Sled

Each team of 5 athletes will push a sled down a 25 yd. course, turn around, and push it back(width of course and penalty if they go outside of it).  This is a timed event. 5 athletes from each team will compete in this event.  The team will begin with the front edge of the sled just behind the start of the course.  When the team is ready, the referee will blow the whistle and the clock will start. The team must touch the turn-around line with any part of the sled.  A judge will shout out “TURN” when the sled has reached that point.  Then the team must turn the sled around and push it back to the starting line.  The clock stops when the front edge of the sled crosses the end of the course. If a team does not finish the course, they will not receive a score for this event.

Tire Flip Relay

All 5 athletes will be used for this team event. Athletes will work alone to flip a tire down a

course of 25 yards. Each team will make 1 trip down the course, using a different athlete for

each trip. This is a timed event. Team scores will be determined by the team’s overall time.

The event will begin with the front edge of the tire at the start of the course. The first athlete

will start with his hands on top of the tire. On the referee’s whistle, the clock will start. The

athlete will then flip the tire down the course. When the entire tire has crossed the end of the course and the tire is on the ground, the next athlete will start. The clock will stop when the front edge of the tire is on the ground and has crossed the end of the course on the 5th trip. Athletes may only make one trip down the course. If a team only has 4 athletes, one athlete will be allowed to make 2 trips.  The tire must be flipped end-over-end down the course. Rolling or carrying the tire is not permitted. If the tire is rolled, the referee will instruct the athletes to roll it back to the point where the roll started and begin flipping the tire from there. Athletes must wait for the tire to be across the end of the course and on the ground before they start their run down the course. Failure to do this will result in a 5-second penalty to be added to the team’s overall

time. Athletes are encouraged to wear gloves during this event.

QB Throw

Each athlete will throw a weighed blocking dummy (QB) weighing approximately 85 lbs. for distance. Then the next athlete on the team throws from the point at which the QB stopped.  This continues until all 5 athletes on the team have taken their turn. Team scores will be determined by the total distance of the teams throws.  5 athletes from each team will compete in this event.  The athlete will throw the QB with any method they choose. If an athlete steps on or over the throwing line, they will get one re-throw.  If the athlete steps over the line again, that athlete’s throw will count as a distance of zero.  Athletes may only have one turn. If a team only has 4 athletes, one athlete will be allowed to take 2 turns.  Athletes may wear gloves or use hand chalk during this event.

Bench for Reps

Each athlete will accomplish as many repetitions on the bench as possible. Team scores will be determined by the total number of reps. 5 athletes from each team will compete in this event. Athletes will lift 185 lbs.  The athlete will take the weight from the racks and hold it at arm’s length before starting the movement. Each repetition will include touching the chest and pressing the bar until the elbows are locked. At the completion of each rep, the referee will call out the number of

completed repetitions. The bar must touch the athlete’s chest and the athlete’s buttocks must stay on the bench. Failure to do this will eliminate that repetition from the athlete’s score. On the athlete’s final rep the athlete must wait until the rep count is called out to return the bar to the racks. Wrist wraps and chalk may be used on this event. But elbow wraps and bench shirts of any type aren’t permitted.

Weighted ball Throw

Each athlete will throw an 8-kilo or 16 lb. medicine ball for distance. Team scores will be determined by the sum of the athletes’ longest throws.  5 athletes from each team will compete in this event.  The athlete will throw a medicine ball with any method they choose. Each athlete will take 2 throws. Throws will be measured from the front of the mark that the medicine ball makes to

the center of the throwing line. If an athlete steps on or over the throwing line, the throw will

not be measured. Athletes may wear gloves or use hand chalk during this event.

Obstacle Course

All 5 athletes will be used for this team event. Athletes will work alone, one at a time, to complete the course, using a different athlete for each trip. This is a timed event. Team scores will be determined by the team’s overall time.

The event will begin with the front edge of the tire at the start of the course. The first athlete

will start with his hands behind the starting line. On the referee’s whistle, the clock will start. The

athlete will then maneuver  the course. When the entire course has been completed and the previous athlete has tackled the “QB” dummy, the official will say “GO” and the second athlete will start in the same manner as the previous one.   The clock will stop when the last of the five athletes tackles the “QB” dummy.  Athletes may only make one trip down the course. If a team only has 4 athletes, one athlete will be allowed to make 2 trips.  Each obstacle must be completed.  Every infraction will result in the team receiving a 2 second penalty for each infraction.   Athletes must wait for the official to signal them to start and their hands must be on the ground before they start their run down the course.. Failure to do this will result in a 5-second penalty to be added to the team’s overall time. Athletes are encouraged to wear gloves during this event.

Tug of War

All 5 athletes will be used for this team event.  A team may compete with 4 athletes in event of an injury.  Teams will be 10 yards apart.  Their will be a 1 minute time limit.  The team which pulls the flag marking the center of the rope past their line wins.  If after the 1 minute time limit neither team has pulled the flag across their line, then the team that the flag is nearer to wins. Athletes are encouraged to wear gloves during this event.  The only chalk or powder allowed is Johnson’s Baby Powder.  Athletes are responsible for supplying their own gloves and powder.  Teams will be seeded by the total point received from the first 6 event.
