Northwest coach Chris Collins made an apology following Saturday’s boys basketball win over Maize after he made an inappropriate gesture, according to City League athletic director J Means. Collins had made the gesture after Northwest senior Craig Nicholson hit the game-winning shot. Whether Collins would be disciplined is a personnel issue, Means said, and he can’t comment on it.

That Collins made such a gesture is surprising — I cannot think of anyone less likely to lose control in such a fashion. Collins is always classy and says just the right thing.

It just goes to show, that in the heat of a moment, errors in judgment can occur. While Collins refused to talk to me about this today, I give him credit for making a public apology.
