Yesterday I checked out Class 6A, today it’s looking at the 5A quarterfinals, where four of the state’s Top 10 teams are still alive with No. 1 Bishop Carroll, No. 2 Salina South, No. 6 Emporia and No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas. We’ll hit 4A tomorrow.
St. Thomas Aquinas (9-1) at Blue Valley (6-4), 7 p.m. – Great matchup, and mainly because Blue Valley handed Aquinas its only loss of the season, 29-28 on Oct. 4.
Blue Valley West (8-2) at Bishop Miege (5-5) – Blue Valley West won the regular-season matchup against Miege, 41-36. Miege quarterback Montell Cozart, a Kansas commit, carved up BV West for 371 yards and five touchdowns in the loss.
Bishop Carroll (10-0) at Andover (8-2) – Carroll cruised to a 55-27 victory over Hays in last Friday’s 5A playoff opener – that was after the Eagles trailed 21-17 late in the first half. Andover used big plays to defeat Ark City 31-14 in the Trojans’ opener. Andover’s defense did a great job of containing Ark City quarterback Riley Dowler last week, and once they did that the game was pretty much theirs. Carroll doesn’t just have one facet of the game or one player you can stop and expect to win.
Emporia (9-1) at Salina South (9-1) – Salina South sophomore running back Mike Jones set the school record with 411 rushing yards and five touchdowns two weeks ago in a 56-21 win over Great Bend, then followed that performance with 122 rushing yards in last week’s 62-21 win over Goddard. Emporia’s offense is just as impressive. The Spartans had 598 yards of offense – 473 rushing – in a 55-27 win over Andover Central on Friday.
