One of the best parts — no, THE best part — of the Dodge City tournament is the national anthem before the championship game. I videoed it, which doesn’t do it justice. I get teary every time I’m here.

Fifth place

Derby 64, Newton 42

Derby played so much better than it did in that opening game of the tournament. Coach Brett Flory credited the team getting used to playing in their rotations again — coming back from Taylor Schieber’s injury.

Derby also switched to a zone defense, and it was effective against Newton, which failed to score in the first quarter.

Derby went inside to Tyler Chambers and Josiah Ray, which I think has to happen. And they had the perimeter game going, along with the defense, which caused so many problems for Newton.

Good way for Derby to end the tournament.

Newton 0 15 5 22 — 42

Derby– Theis 3, Rogers 6, Dunham 7, Hunter 11, Swink 1, Schieber 8, Osborn 2, Chambers 13, Ray 13. Totals 25 (4) 10-16 64.
Newton– Krogmeir 9, Wright 1, Morrison 3, Drinnen 6, Walker 8, Downey 8, Robinson 5, Lehman 2. Totals 15 (4) 8-12 42..

Derby’s Tyler Chambers
Yeah, he talks about the pretty boys.

Scott City 60, Dodge City 51
In the third-place game, Scott City controlled the game, leading by as many as 15 points early, 23-8. Dodge City kept it close, but Scott City was so strong inside with Drew Kite, who had 21 points and six rebounds. Brett O’Neil had 15 points and six assists, while Tyler Hess had seven rebounds, Austin Habiger 9 points.
Dodge City was led by Shaphan Gross’ 18 points and 8 rebounds. Matt Goedeken had 13 points.

Seventh place

Wichita South 55, Buhler 49

South gets its second win of the season. At times the Titans looked strong offensively. There was a flow, a rhythm that I hadn’t yet seen this season.

They got it inside, which was important, considering their height advantage, and they pushed the ball. Kaden Griffin was outstanding in the first half, scoring all 10 of his points.

South had the speed advantage on Buhler, too, but sometimes got out of control. South is headed in the right direction. It will just take some time.
Buhler 8 11 9 21 — 49
South 15 11 10 19 — 55

Buhler – Felty 3 4-4 11, Norquist 3 2-2 9, Berblinger 3 0-0 6, Keeler 3 1-1 7, Williams 6 2-5 14, Davis 1 0-0 2. Totals 19 (2) 9-12 49.
South– Martin 4 2-2 10, Harris 1 5-8 7, Adkins 0 0-2 0, Bowers 0 2-2 2, Griffin 4 1-1 10, Keiswetter 3 1-2 7, Moore 6 1-1 13, Rogers 3 0-0 6. Totals 21 (1) 12-18 55
