I would like to know how Erika Mattingly does not make first or second team All City?
She runs the show for a team that beat Heights three times, who gets three players nominated? Is it because she’s white? Total sham! I bet coach Pulliam has her on his first team. Her state title says enough, she was the best player on the floor!

  • greyhound3

Curious to how they determine Coach Scales is not the outright Coach of the year. He beats the most dominate program in the entire state 3 times and has to share the award with a team that gets 4 th in a smaller class? Well, my curiosity should stir the pot at the least!

  • http://twitter.com/Hovpen Bob Hovey

Now you should know it is my job around here to stir the pot.  But as for your question on coach of the year,  South and Kapaun shared the league title each beating the other once and those were their only losses thus the co-coach of the year.  That would be my educated, pot stiring opinion.    And Miss Mattingly will pick up her honors along the road.  She does have three more seasons to play.

  • Footballkicker50

Here are my problems with these selections:
-Scales should be outright coach of the year
-How does Heights have 3 players on the top 2 teams, while South has 2
-Catholic school love fest? sorry but maybe only one of those girls from both teams combined deserves first or second team
-Mattingly and Northcutt (who by the way does not go to North) both deserved at least second team

Guess the people who determine these are the same ones who allow the refs to be bias for Heights and Kapaun

  • Footballkicker50

South also didn’t have their full team…remember in the first game Northcutt (defensive shut down player) wasn’t able to play because the North High Administration forced her to sit because she transferred, which brings up another point, when has any school required a player to sit? Pretty sure all those girls who transferred to Heights weren’t forced to sit…

  • http://twitter.com/Hovpen Bob Hovey

Ahh,  I think the coaches of the teams pick those all league teams. Maybe they should let the parents do it.   So in your opinion, all five girls for South should have been first team.

  • greyhound3

The city league needs to vote on a defensive player of the year. Eledria Franklin deserves this award, for the job she did most notably on Katie Palmer(x3). So in my book, if heights has 3 out of ten, south has to get 4-5. Elliot, Rogers, Mattingly, then DOY Franklin. To follow up your notion that Erika Mattingly has time to attain more awards, your missing the point, she attained the awards, but due to the situation here in the gwal was snubbed. I will not be suprised to see her on the first or second team all state teams.

  • greyhound3

How is it that the city league has so many hon. ment. picks. The other leagues only have a fraction of what the coaches  in the gwal nominated. The discrepancy is odd to me. I’m sure this will remain a mystery.

  • kssportsfan

Coaches from each League/Division meet and vote for players in that league/division. The votes are tallied and 1st Team, 2nd Team, and Honorable Mention lists are created based on coaches votes. The coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players. Any player that gets one vote is at least Honorable Mention, so that’s why some leagues may have more Hon Mention players on their list than others, plus the number of teams vary from league to league.

  • Inclusion

Heights senior girls particularly the three on 1st and 2nd team went to the state championship game each year at Heights and was instrumental in each game, winning twice, taken 2nd twice (not to bad, if you ask me) So that’s why they make 1st and 2nd teams…….Greyhound3
Pulliam couldn’t vote for his own players so that should say alot about the impression they made on city league coaches.
Every dynasty comes to an end sooner or later!

  • greyhound3

Last year was last year Inclusion, an athlete does not get awarded the year after they accomplish something. The girls from Heights were beat three times by South High, the first two do not really matter if you lose the third for the state title. That being said, one of two things has to be acknowledged, South High had the best coach or the best players! Whichever was the case, both were overlooked by the other coaches. The other said coaches have made the choice to disrespect South High, Coach Scales, and his players by the picks we now see on the all city teams. Fewer players on all city teams, and co-coach of the year? What a shame. With all that being said, i’m positive the program at South High, received the award they were aiming for STATE CHAMPS! The other area coaches had a chance to vote on that, but it was a little different type of vote! We all know Erika Mattingly was the best player on the floor this past Saturday at Koch Arena, in the states largest class, against the states second best team, in the state championship game. So whats the chances she was not at least one of the ten best players in her own league. Like I said before do not be surprised to see the other coaches in the state vote her to an all state team!

P.s. City League Girls Coaches, I hope Coach Scales repays the lack of respect you have showed his program when his team plays you next year so their is none of this confusion!

  • Inclusion

Mattingly had one decent game and you want to crown her the next Lynette Woodard….lol. Let’s look at her body of work at which that’s what area coaches look at when voting. Does she rank in the top ten of any of the Stats in the city league, scoring? No Rebounding? No Assist? No Steals? No So why should she be ranked in the top ten? Heights three are ranked in the top ten in all those areas just stated. By the way they missed voting her on the All Metro or State teams. She has three years to improve her chances.

  • greyhound3

One decent game? She had three really good games at Koch. 24-1 means she had 24 really good games. A point guards measured by her teams success. I’m not saying she has to have gaudy numbers. I personally watch the games, then add into the equation the intangibles that aren’t on stat sheets. Like you said the other coaches dont feel the same way I do. But I would bet your run down of those stats is inaccurate being that none of those stats are compiled and shared. I guarantee she is the top ten in assist,  and steals. If you have them post them. Our city league coaches are obviously not very credible, South High state champs 2 all city players = 3 wins vs Heights
Heights 2nd place finisher 3 all city players = 3 losses vs South High
    pretty simple math bud

Unless you have those stats don’t bring ficticious points into an argument! I’ll end this topic by saying, Heights gets recognition for beating up on other teams with players that dont live in their district. I’m happy they get to taste their own medicine. Coach Scales beat Heights with his team and would  beat his team with the talent at Heights. The girls at Heights are deserving, but they were out coached and I feel South girls are a little more deserving, because their coach put them in a position to win it all!

  • Donielle Watson

I agree Ericka Mattingly should have been all metro and all city league.  The point guard is the quarterback of the basketball team.  She had the ball in her hand over 50% of the time.  As a freshman point guard she out shined all of the other point guards in the league and the state.  Great season Ericka

  • Donielle Watson

I agree with greyhound3.  Ericka Mattingly is the best pg in the state.  She has the medal to prove it.

  • Inclusion

Allow me to educate you and this will be my last comments on this subject. YOU ARE BEING A HYPROCRITE! You accusing Heights of doing something that South also has done.
Case in point, one player from South played at North last year, another player played the past two seasons at Collegate and now enrolled at Northeast so she can play at South and the last player played the past two season at Heights and now plays at South. The first two players are starters for South. So in saying that if the players would have stayed at their initial schools would South would have won? Don’t think so.
The first lesson in debates or discussions is to know what you are tallking about, be knowledgable in the subject. Which is obvious you don’t. Enough said!

  • Lovinhuskers

I’m curious in how Kendrian Elliot makes all Metro and all city when she was sitting on the bench for half of the state championship game in foul trouble.  South won the state championship with Mattingly calling the shots and Rogers playing tough D.  Elliot is good, but not all metro, and not the best on her own team.  Put the Garden Plain girl in the city league or the AVCTL Division 1…average and would not start for KMC or half of the other teams but yet she is all metro?

  • greyhound3

In my post it says, I’m glad they got a taste of their own medicine, in regards to transfers, you show me where its says I give a damn if any of them play by the rules.

Where are those stats hotshot debater? Your obviously not reading my post before u go on your rants! Good day

  • greyhound3

You haven’t provided your mystery stats because they don’t exist, you take this little forum to say I don’t know what I’m talking about? Yet the head ref in debate breaks the cardinal rule, provide your source? You have never won a debate in your life

  • greyhound3

    Excellent points

  • greyhound3

Well everybody thinks the leading scorer is always the best player. They figured give one spot to the leading scorer of the state’s best team. Puzzles me.

  • http://twitter.com/Hovpen Bob Hovey

I believe all league teams were chosen before the state tournament was played.  It did not, and should not have had a bearing on who was selected to the all league teams.

  • greyhound3

I agree, state should not have anything to do with all league. I’m illustrating a point, from what i saw at state, one can imagine she played very well against the mediocre to bad teams littered throughout her league.I.E. North, West, East, Southeast, NW, Carroll
And she led the team that defeated tie for first place Kapaun once and 2nd place Heights twice.

I also understand the voting was done by other area coaches. She would be the best player on all six teams noted above.

  • ballofanykind

So, you are saying that 3A and smaller should not be considered for all metro as they couldn’t possibly compete in upper classes?

  • Lovinhuskers

Consistency of competition. If the smaller schools would play against the 6A schools in league play, the players stats from the smaller school’s would not be the same. There are some good small school players, but there stats would still be less vs the talent in 6A. It is comparing apples to oranges. Scoring 18 vs Wichita Heights is a bit tougher than 18 vs Belle Plain.

  • zipzap1515

Inclusion went to heights. nuff said. therea no way mattingly didnt lead in assists she passes like no other. She reads the court and gets the ball exactly where it needs to be. south beat heights not once…. Not twice…. But THREE times with two damn food freshman starters. So bash south titans all want… In the end they out hustled hieghts physically, mentally and was coached by a damn good coach

  • zipzap1515

Fyi she was benched in the last 6 minutes of the fourth quarter. She did her part in that game right along with the rest of her team. shes a key player who puts points on tha board and dont u forget shes a freahman….. You will see alot more of her. whats pathetic is that all you idiots have time to get on here and talk trash on our youth. Im proud of you south titans you ladies played hard and you played damn good! Dont let these ignorant fools tell u otherwise. and for u that wanna talk trash on elliott and mattingly….. You got somthin commin….. Just wait and see…
