South athletic director Michelle Kuhns confirmed Thursday morning that Kendall Hope has resigned as the boys basketball coach.

The new coach will be South’s eighth in nine seasons. The last time South, which has won 15 games in the last five seasons, had a winning record was under Deon Allen in 2007-08 when the Titans went 15-7.

South last went to state in 1999-2000 in coach Chris Davis’ second season. He coached South for eight seasons and was 55-96. Then Deon Allen was there for 2 years, 22-22. Ty White one year, 3-18; Steve Lilly 1 year, 2-19, Demarcco Owens 2 years, 8-34. Chris Brown was hired after Owens was let go in the spring of 2012, but then Brown was let go later that  summer of 2012.

Do current high schoolers even know about the domination of South high basketball from 1986-87 to 1995-96 when Steve Eck was 227-15 with six titles?

I got here in 1996 and South was 10-11 under Charles Williams, then Mark Potter took over and was 16-9 and finished third in 6A in 1997-98. Potter left after one year and is still the Newman men’s coach.

They should hire coach scales to coach the boys and girls. If he can turn the environment around this quickly with the girls, why not the boys too. He has all the kids in the schools respect already I’m sure. Instant credibility.

I agree.  It has to better than what they have been doing.  I can’t believe South has had 8 coaches in 9 years.
