It was pretty easy to predict the Class 5A champion last year at this time. Bishop Carroll had such a deep, experienced team with a ridiculously talented quarterback in Zeke Palmer (a Top 11 pick), that there really wasn’t any other team to name as a top-ranked team.
And going back through Carroll’s 2012 season, wow. Those numbers are crazy. No game was closer than 24 points, the championship game was won by 39.
This year the prediction isn’t as easy. I’m saying right now Bishop Carroll, and I have to tell you, I am well aware that I could be wrong. Carroll doesn’t have to rebuild, it will reload, but there’s a question at quarterback. Two players, Tyler Skilling and Colton Howell, will battle it out until the first game. Either one should do well — especially because he’ll have two talented backs in Tory Smith and Denzel Goolsby.
Salina South should be Carroll’s biggest challenger on the west side. Hays has outstanding QB Alex Delton, but Salina South is loaded. I mean, loaded. I could easy say Salina South is the pick to win 5A. And Salina South’s first game? At Derby, a 6A favorite. Wow.
Other teams to watch for in 5A include Blue Valley (always a contender and a team that has talent coming back), BV West, Aquinas and Miege. I’ve even heard from those who think Mill Valley will be a team to beat.
So who do you think will win 5A? Agree with me? Disagree? Let me know.
