This week’s Class 6A baseball rankings are out, courtesy of the coaches association.
Maize is on top of 6A, while East, Campus, Northwest and Heights are all in the top 10. Who’s your favorite to win 6A at the end of this month?

I’m working on getting all the baseball rankings, but for right now I just have Class 6A and 5A. These rankings are done by the coaches.
How do they look to you? Are the coaches getting it right?

I can’t believe this is the final day of 2011, but here we are, looking at 2012 starting.
We can’t have the year end, though, without a look back at 2011.
What stories fascinated you? What were the highlights for you? Below are some of my memories from the year. They are definitely not a complete rehashing of 2011, so feel free to add your thoughts.

Another honor comes in for the nationally-ranked Maize baseball team.
The American Baseball Coaches Association selected Maize’s Rocky Helm as its national high school Division I coach of the year. Helm led the Eagles to a 25-0 record and the Class 6A title.

Gardner-Edgerton grad Bubba Starling, a stud football, basketball and baseball player, was named to the USA Today’s All-USA first team baseball team.
This is just another accolade for Starling, who was taken fifth overall by the KC Royals in the June draft.
He’s still planning on reporting to Nebraska on July 10.

Maize, which went 25-0 and won the Class 6A title, is at No. 3 in the Maxpreps.com Xcellent 50 national rankings.
Maize also finished ranked No. 18 in the ESPN Rise rankings.

I love when people send me stories! This one came from Dodge City AD Jay Gifford, and it’s about Randy Wetzel, a Great Bend assistant principal, working the College World Series.
Gifford also said that the same day Wetzel worked the CWS, Todd Tichenor, who refs basketball at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions, worked the Cubs-Yankees game. I wrote about Tichenor in 2006 when he was a minor-league ump.

Here’s a story about a Connecticut high school baseball team in the state final that is tough to read — one mistake, the failure to touch home plate, led to losing the state championship.
My question to you is, how do you handle this with your child, your player, your team?

If you love those sports stories that make you happy, then this is the story for you. It has nothing to do with the NFL lockout, which involves billions of dollars while the majority of this country battles job loss and major cutbacks. It has nothing to do with a looming NBA lockout (same as the NFL!).
It’s about a Maize South student who sees a need. Wes Phillips is collecting used sporting goods to help a Little League baseball team that lost everything. So if you want to help, the info is below.
I’m betting they’d take other sporting goods, too.
This is a story we can get behind, right?

Maize baseball, arguably one of the best teams Kansas has produced, is ranked No. 19 by ESPN and is ranked 28th nationally by Maxpreps.com and fourth in the Xcellent 25, while Rivals.com had Maize ranked 27th on May 25.
