We’ve got regular season finales tonight, we’ve got teams desperately trying to get into the playoffs. Who will it be?

What games do you think are the best tonight? I’m voting for Andale at Maize South. Andale might be 2-0 in district play, but that doesn’t mean a playoff berth is a guarantee. Maize South took care of Cheney just like Andale did,but while Maize South lost to Trinity by 1, Andale beat Trinity by 4. Yeah, this is a close, close race. Trinity needs a big win over Cheney tonight to make its first playoff appearance in the program’s three years of existence.

Let’s hear about some other tight races. And while we’re at it, are you glad the KSHSAA went to taking two teams from every district?

The basketball surveys are starting to roll in, the all-metro volleyball and soccer and football nominations are coming in, the all-state and all-class football nominations are coming in. My e-mail inbox is stacked full!

Soccer regionals are going on this week, state volleyball and state cross country this weekend, the regular season football finales … it’s a good week.

Yesterday we had a discussion about home remedies for athletes. A 15-year-old neighbor told us that whenever he gets a cramp in his side or in a muscle, eating mustard solves it immediately.

This fascinated me. Any other remedies out there? Or tricks you’ve learned for your athletes?

*We had four people go undefeated in picks this past week. Congrats to Glen Grider, Marc Reichenberger, Russ McDermed and Lena Grill. It came down to a tiebreaker, and Glen Grider wins! Congrats!

What a weekend of sports. Second week of districts cleared some things up in football, cross country regionals and volleyball sub-states set the table for this weekend’s state tourneys. It is exciting.

The second fall sport has ended, with state golf finishing up on Monday. Congrats to the area athletes who competed, and congrats to Bishop Carroll for finishing second in 5A. Cheney’s Jacie Scheer won 4A and Andale won the team title – impressive victories.

The VarsityKansas.com Big Show is up, sans Jamison Coyle. But Chris Elliott has a good reason for Jamison’s absence. Chris also gloats about picking Garden Plain, while I took Hutchinson Trinity.

What’s on your mind today? All-Metro? All-State? All-League? Most exciting games?

I’ve got a case of the Mondays. OK, not really. But it’s a busy day. We’ve got state golf this weekend, state tennis finished over the weekend. And you have to love the gorgeous weather for both.

Cross country regionals are this weekend, volleyball sub-states, too. Football season is wrapping up. Wow. Amazing, huh?

So what are your favorite moments in this fall sports season?

I’m out all day working on a story for Saturday’s paper, and then I’m off to Garden Plain for the game with Hutchinson Trinity. Should be a great, busy day.
